Opponents of a city plan to demolish and replace Victoria's iconic "Blue Bridge", aka the Johnson Street Bridge, say they are within striking distance of collecting the 6,300 signatures they need to force a referendum on the $63-million new bridge project. The Blue Bridge, designed by Joseph Strauss who also designed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is a bascule type bridge catering to vehicles, a railway, cyclists, and pedestrians, which rises for boats to sail underneath.
